Labor Day, aka the unofficial end of summer, is here. As we celebrate the final rays of summer sun, we need to remember our furry friends. When trying to fit in one last summer hurrah we need to remember how to keep our canine companions safe, happy, and healthy with all the commotion.

- Stay away from the grill. Make sure to keep an eye on your barking buddy when the grill is on. Those curious canines cannot help themselves when they smell something cooking. They want to be first in line to taste whatever their pet parents are grilling. Make sure to keep an eye on them, and keep them out of the line of fire while you are grilling to avoid any accidents.
- No dumpster diving! The saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” may hold true on cookout days. Don’t let your four-legged friends go searching for treats in the garbage. While the scents may be savory, there isn’t anything good about pets foraging through trash. Your pet could come across choking hazards or find themselves suddenly sick from the contents of your dumpster.
- No pets allowed. No pets, except for your own of course! With the excitement of cookout day and the influx of people in your canine’s environment it may be better to limit the number of animals present at your Labor Day festivities. Make sure to only allow animals that your pet has previously met and is comfortable with. With human guests and a change in their daily routine, your furry friend may feel overwhelmed or stressed about the party and more animals may increase their uneasiness.
- Create an escape free zone. Between the loud music, fireworks, and increased traffic, the end of summer celebrations may confuse your dog. Make sure to block any potential escape routes your pet can use during the Labor Day festivities for their own safety. It may even be best to create a small quiet area for your pet to relax in, if you notice Fido acting strangely.
Make sure to keep your pet safe as summer winds down with these tips!
